LO:4 Evaluation

     FRONT COVER:

My font style is a bold sans serif font to grab the reader’s attention and make it stand out and the masthead reads  ‘Steel Trekkers’ to draw a contrast against the two locations appeal to my Sheffield audience to try and get them out of the city. This was done using the text tool and dialog box and using the stroke tool and I also used a graphics tablet and grass brush tool to make grass effect, this was done to connote the nature and kind of the magazine it is as the colour green connotes the outdoors and the grass effect is an iconic symbol of the outdoors and the iconography ads to the Mise en scene.

How this fits my target audience: This fits my target audience that I set out in by brief of "My readers will most likely be young professionals living in the city who have moderate spending power and will fall in the C1 NRS social grade" my mastheads meets the target audience as it makes a contrast of the city to the country side which and as they live in the city this is fitting.

I used natural green colours similar to that found in nature to connote a natural and outdoors feel. Cover lines are things to interest the readers i.e. “Get to grips with nature” and things to draw the reader in i.e. “the city is boring". I did this using my text tool, shapes tool and then used transformation tools to make the board tight to the text.

The main cover line is “Doctor to DofE      JAMIE       mud sweat and tears” this will create anchorage to the main cover image (Roland Barthes 1969) and by doing this we are creating an ideal self, this is written in a yellow font to make it stand out and connotes danger and importance. This was done using the text tool and dialog box to format and position my text and using the stroke tool, I also used a shape tool to make the lay out look better and more appealing. I used separate layers for a lot of the words I used so I had more control over the positioning of the text.

How this fits my target audience: This fits my target audience that I set out in by brief of "My readers will most likely be young professionals living in the city who have moderate spending power and will fall in the C1 NRS social grade" By saying that he is a doctor shows him to be a young professional meaning my audience can relate to him.

House style colours are colours that have connotations of outdoors and adventure i.e. yellow, green and brown but are also consistent with the DofE colour scheme and the pictures that feature. I created a contestant house style with colours by adding strokes using the layer styles tools to txt and images I also had to keep this consistent to promote a consistent house style and build brand identity.

My main cover image will be a medium close up of a hiker with an outdoor scene in the background wearing out doors clothes with mud on their face to connote ruggedness and toughness, to capture the landscape in the background I will need a deep depth of field when taking the picture to keep the model and hiker in focus. The model must stand in a wide stance, chest pushed out and looking at the camera to connote power and strength. This will appeal to my male and female audience as an ideal self and ideal partner.

some touch ups were required to the models exposure I did this by using the exposure tool and saturation tool to make the colours in seem more vibrant to make it stand out more to the reader. I also used the burn tool to make his face appear darker as it was slightly to exposed.

A banner along the bottom reads ‘’Enjoy the beautiful views from Hollins cross’’ the text is yellow on a dark banner to make it stand out and draw the readers attention. I did this using the shapes tool and then adjusted the opacity using the opacity slider and then added a yellow line on top using the shapes tool to stand out to the reader.

CONTENTS PAGE:

the masthead of the contents page is a bold sans serif font, the same as the green used in the front cover to make a consistent house style. I imported this using the rectangle frame tool to place the image in InDesign I also used the fill content proportionally so the masthead wouldn't be distorted or hard to read.

article that feature are articles on the DofE award scheme and what it entails . My articles have images of the outdoors and people participating on outdoor activities (hiking). I imported this using the rectangle frame tool to place the image in InDesign I also used the fill content proportionally so the masthead wouldn't be distorted.

The contents page is laid out with Colum with page numbers, pictures and a brief description of the article to make the page easy to navigate and draw the reader in. I did this when I was setting up my document, the pictures are long shots, group shots and medium close up to show the reader what the article is about. I wrote these using the text tool and the edited them using the stroke tool.

Next to page numbers and titles I will have relevant images to that article to draw the reader in. I wrote it using the text tool and used the wrap around bounding box tool so the number could easily be read.

DofE DPS

The photos will be of cadets taking part in DofE. The people that I take pictures of will mostly be wearing outdoor clothing, I will be needing a medium close up of any one I interview using a short depth of field to draw attention to them. i imported the images into a rectangle frame tool and then used the fill frame proportionally so the image was the desired size and not distorted also used the rotation tool so they appeared more slanted and stuck on to create the desired effect.

imported a copyright free image of a cork board to my DPS so it would appear as if the images are pinned to a cork board. i also added small circles using the shapes tool and then used the FX tool and used the bevel and emboss tool to make the circles appear more like push pins.

i added a slanted image of the DofE logo and turned to opacity down using the FX tool to appear like a water mark this adds meaning to the article.

The interview would be about their opinions on DofE and their personal experiences, I am going to interview participants and Instructors of the DofE award, I began to write the article on word and then copy and pasted them in to InDesign and arranged them in the columns

My headline “golden standard” is used to draw the audience in i.e. “the gold standard" The colour of the text is yellow to be in keeping with the gold theme and i've added a back ground board using the shapes tool and transformation tools.
